Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2013, $389,934)

The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 (AWA) (Pub. L. 109-248, 42 U.S.C. § 16901, et seq) authorizes the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART) to administer sex offender management grants. These grants assist state, local and tribal jurisdictions in developing and/or enhancing sex offender registration and notification programs that support substantial implementation of Title I of the AWA, known as the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). SORNA was enacted to protect the public from convicted sex offenders and offenders against children by establishing a comprehensive national system for the registration of those offenders.

The Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate's (SWO) goal is to maintain ongoing compliance with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). This will be accomplished by (1) maintaining a SWO Sex Offender Registry Office (SORO) that will update the Sex Offender Registration Code and Policy and Procedures Manual to include sex offender registration forms; (2) maintaining SORO staff who are trained on SORNA compliance; (3) continuing to register and monitor sex offenders for compliance in an appropriate and timely manner; (4) continuing to seek funding for the SWO's SORO to operate; and (5) providing training to the appropriate jurisdictions, tribal schools, programs and the community, by creating safe zones. ca/ncf
