Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $300,000)
The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 (AWA) authorizes the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART) to administer grants to assist states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and tribal jurisdictions in developing and/or enhancing sex offender registration and notification programs that support substantial implementation of Title I of the AWA, the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). SORNA was enacted to protect the public from convicted sex offenders and offenders against children by establishing a comprehensive national system for the registration of those offenders.
AWA funds will be used by Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation to 1) continue to communicate with other tribes and municipalities to share information and implementation strategies and to resolve critical multijurisdictional challenges; 2) develop a more in-depth registry search capacity (physical and technical) in order to identify and monitor sex offenders residing, working, visiting, going to school or just moving through the area; 3) research and develop multidisciplinary and culturally appropriate approach(es) to community education and notification.
