Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2013, $222,844)
The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 (AWA) (Pub. L. 109-248, 42 U.S.C. § 16901, et seq) authorizes the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART) to administer sex offender management grants. These grants assist state, local and tribal jurisdictions in developing and/or enhancing sex offender registration and notification programs that support substantial implementation of Title I of the AWA, known as the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). SORNA was enacted to protect the public from convicted sex offenders and offenders against children by establishing a comprehensive national system for the registration of those offenders.
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is working toward two goals in implementing SORNA. The first goal is to ensure compliance with SORNA requirements. The Community will achieve this by (1) updating internal policies and procedures to comply with SORNA; (2) training police department employees on the registration program; (3) educating members of the community about the program; (4) converting paper records to digital format; and (5) identifying sex offenders who have not complied with jurisdictional registry requirements and bringing them into compliance. The Community's second goal for this period is to perform research and obtain documentation verifying the status of possible sex offenders not yet in the SORNA system. ca/ncf
