Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $250,000)
The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 (AWA) authorizes the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART) to administer grants to assist states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and tribal jurisdictions in developing and/or enhancing sex offender registration and notification programs that support substantial implementation of Title I of the AWA, the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). SORNA was enacted to protect the public from convicted sex offenders and offenders against children by establishing a comprehensive national system for the registration of those offenders.
The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians will use AWA funds to support continued implementation of SORNA by maintaining personnel at current levels and enhancing daily operations. The tribe will support training for law enforcement and other criminal justice agency personnel responsible for sex offender registration, notification, monitoring and investigating failure-to-register cases. The tribe will also continue to support coordinated interagency efforts to enhance implementation of SORNA and provide community education through community meetings. Proposed expenses include personnel and fringe, travel and training, general office supplies, utilities and cellphone service.
