Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $386,637)
The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 (AWA) authorizes the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART) to administer grants to assist states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and tribal jurisdictions in developing and/or enhancing sex offender registration and notification programs that support substantial implementation of Title I of the AWA, the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). SORNA was enacted to protect the public from convicted sex offenders and offenders against children by establishing a comprehensive national system for the registration of those offenders.
The New Mexico Department of Public Safety will partner with the Bernalillo and Santa Fe county sheriff's departments to 1) enhance and streamline sex offender monitoring and tracking; 2) increase the number of sex offender registrations; 3) decrease the number of sex offenders who are unregistered; and 4) provide the partnering law enforcement agencies with modern, evidence-based training, resources and tools for the enforcement of sex offender compliance with state and federal laws. These efforts will support New Mexico's efforts to maintain and improve SORNA compliance.
